Her comments came as she accepted the award for best contemporary song.
"It would be an insult to suggest you go to work for free," she told the audience. "And it's an insult that you think songwriters should do the same."
His comments were echoed by the Chic Nile star Rodgers who told them BBC writers' pay hadn't been increased for "75 years".
"I mean come on, if you work in a pizza place, you're gonna get a raise in 75 years," he said.
The question became a flashpoint for the music industry, prompting a review of the streaming economy by the UK parliament in 2021.
