Jagun Jagun Hack: Our Multi-Million Dollar Industry Is Collapsing, Filmmakers Cry

Audu Kashim, founder and executive director of the Kaduna International Film Festival, has called on the federal government to prevent the collapse of a film industry worth millions of dollars.

He made it known at the 6th Kaduna International Film Festival event on the theme:; "The Globalization of Cinema and its Impact on the World", held in Kaduna.

Kashim expressed his dismay when pirates started selling an abridged version of the hit film titled Jagun Jagun, recently produced by Femi Adebayo, on the streets for N250-500 per copy.

He therefore called on the government to crack down on pirates and copyright infringers, while film producers are losing out.

“We need the government to come to our aid. We spend millions on film production and we need to get our money back.

"Laws protecting creativity fall under the copyright board and the board needs to add more penalties to those found guilty of this copyright infringement." Once there are strong penalties for violations, that will help. »

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kashim called on government at all levels to support the film industry and film festival organizers so that Nigeria's rich culture can be projected to the world.

He also identified tourism as the key sector that increases a country's GDP, citing Dubai as an example of a country with a tourist attraction.

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Dr. John Atseyin, who was present at the event, said the copyright law is now fortified with tougher penalties against property theft intellectual property, in order to protect creators.

Represented by Ms. Susan Bashorun, Director of the Nigerian Copyright Commission of Kaduna, the Chief Executive of the NCC said that “the new Copyright Act is very rich. The penalty has been increased. Gone are the days when a hacker was asked to pay N1000 and there in court he would throw away the N1000 and walk away. No, the penalty is high now.

“We have an online unit in our operational office called OCI, whose function is to investigate online content. We can't go it alone in finding content online if you don't report the theft. Then, after investigation by the OCI, when necessary or prima facie, they will compile a file and bring you to justice.

"For each copy violated, it's 10,000 and the jail term is no longer 3 months." It's been five years. Business is no longer business as usual. And then the judges were trained on issues regarding these issues.

“Things are not business as usual for the evildoers. The hammer of the law will come down on you. If you are high and mighty, you must face the law," the DG said.
