Jamaica qualify for second straight World Cup as Haiti head to play-offs
July 11 – Jamaica secured an automatic spot at the 2023 World Cup with an emphatic 4-0 win over Haiti at BBVA Stadium in Monterrey.
Jamaica have qualified for their second consecutive World Cup and in the Concacaf W Championship, they now advance to the semi-finals later this week where they meet Canada.
It was a significant achievement for Jamaica which, under Lorne Donaldson, looked structured and disciplined. Jamaica was a surprise qualifier in 2019 and few gave them much hope of breaking out of their group here, being drawn along with the United States, Mexico and Haiti.
But underestimating the Reggae Girlz is a mistake. They started with a surprise win over hosts Mexico with a goal from their talismanic captain and centre-forward Khadija Shaw, and never really looked back.
Shaw scored twice against an energetic Haiti to underscore his threat and lead his country to the Australia/New Zealand final next year.
The game, played in nearly 90-degree heat, opened up to the pace of Melchie Dumornay, the dynamo behind much of Haiti's forward movement, in the third minute showing the threat which she creates by sweeping the goal to the right and delivering a low cross just behind her incoming forwards. It was a sign of things to come for the Haitians who could never make the last ball in the box count against a tightly organized Jamaican back line.
The first real chance if the game went to Manchester City's Jamaican striker, Shaw, who received the ball with her back to goal, turned her defender to see her shot cleared at the post by Haitian goalkeeper Nathonie Ambroise. Chantelle Swaby headed the corner.
It was through and through. In the 11th minute, Dumornay broke midway and fired into Spencer's left post.
The best odds were with the Reggae Girlz. In the 22nd minute, a free kick from the right by Trudi Carter was sent down by Shaw only for the ball to bounce comfortably into Ambrosie's hands.
In the 25th minute, Jamaica got their deserved breakthrough. Shaw pushed the ball to a Carter forward on the right who stroked it past Ambrosie.
The goal brought Haiti to life. In the 29th minute, Batcheba Louis entered the box but widened with a side foot under Jamaican pressure. Dumornay increased his intensity, pressing higher up the pitch. Louisville's Satara Murray at the center of the Jamaican defense matched his pace and intensity.
Shaw was the highlight of the Jamaican attack and in the 42nd minute she drove to the right of the Haitian defense to have her pass to the incoming runners blocked. Haiti responded but Nerilia Mondesir's shot went wide.
The half ended with Jamaican pressure and a 1-0 lead.
The second half started with Haiti in attack. In the 48th minute, Atlanta Primus exploded from a corner kick. In the 52nd minute, Haiti's top scorer Roselord Borgella found herself free on the right only for her shot crossing the goal which slipped past the left post of Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.
>But it was Jamaica who scored thanks to the brilliance of an individual forward from Shaw. With the ball at her feet on the edge of the box, she played one-two with Havana Solaun, moved to the right and shot 18m to the right of Ambroise.
Four minutes later, Haiti came close to pulling one back when Dumornay hammered a shot from outside the post which a Spencer dive drove onto the post. Two minutes later, Spencer was back in action, pushing Louis back.
But it was not going to the night of Haiti. Jamaica scored a third goal in 69 minutes. A Clare Constant handball into the box left Shaw scoring his second of the night from the spot, hammering the ball past Ambroise's left.
In the 78th minute, Jamaica had a fourth. A free kick to the right from Carter finds the head of Drew Spence who heads back a...
