JUST IN: Abbas bolsters House Standing Committees, appoints Chairs Wase, Faleke, Gagdi and Betara

House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas set up the House standing committees on Thursday.

Mr. Abbas, however, increased the number of committees to 134 from the 110 formed by his predecessor, Femi Gbajabiamila.

That means he created 24 new committees in the 360-member Chamber.

Among those named to head the commission are former vice president Idris Wase, Yusuf Gagdi and Musa Betara, all of whom were vying for the presidential seat against Mr Abbas a few months ago. Messrs. Gagdi and Betara subsequently withdrew from the race.

Mr. Wase (APC, Plateau) was given the chair of the less gimmicky committee on federal character, while Mr. Betara (APC, Borno) was named chair of the committee on the Federal Capital Territory.

Mr. Gagdi retained the leadership of the Navy Committee, which he headed under Mr. Gbajabiamila.

Mr. Abbas has appointed Abubakar Bichi (APC, Kano) as chairman of the credit committee and he will be replaced by Idu Igariwey (PDP, Ebonyi).

President Bola Tinubu's political ally, James Faleke (APC, Lagos) retained the chairmanship of the finance committee which he chaired during the ninth session under the chairmanship of Mr. Gbajabiamila. Ditto for his deputy, Abdulahi Saidu (APC, Niger).

Mr. Faleke, who hails from Kogi State, was Tinubu's campaign organization secretary until a few months ago.

Bamidele Salam (PDP, Osun) will chair the Public Accounts Committee while Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) will retain the Defense Committee.

Former House Leader Alhassan Doguwa (APC, Kano) is the new Chairman of the Petroleum Committee (Upstream).
