Kano ALGON and NNPP joke about alleged plan to use council funds to buy votes during elections

The Kano State chapter of the Association of All Local Government Chairs of Nigeria (ALGON) has denied that the state government plans to use local government funds to finance election logistics and vote buying in the state's April 15 by-election.

The allegation was made by the Chairman of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) Transitional Committee, Baffa Bichi. He claimed that the presidents of the 44 local governments in the state plan to use funds belonging to their local councils to support the incumbent government.

"The 2023 NNPP Governors' Transition Committee wishes to draw the attention of all 44 Local Government Council Chairpersons and their leaderships and advise them to desist from the alleged back and forths of public funds between their councils and the State Department of Local Government.

“We advise them not to allow themselves to be used, again, as conduits to divert public funds to finance the upcoming supplementary elections in certain states and federal districts in the state; and We further advise them to strictly adhere to all relevant financial regulations and existing guidelines, said the NNPP Transition Committee.

However, Kano ALGON Chairman Baffa Muhammad in the statement urged the NNPP to tread carefully as such an allegation is likely to heat up.

''False claims of this nature are common whenever there is a change of leadership baton, many examples abound: Kano State Governor Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in 2014 to use public funds diverted from the 44 local government areas to finance his presidential ambition.

"It should be recalled that the sum of seventy million naira was allegedly obtained illegally from each of the 44 local governments for this purpose, a case of which is still pending before anti-corruption agencies.''< /p >

"The statement noted that this was intended to set the record straight, adding that although the 'advice' was issued prior to the election of the governor and the subsequent inauguration of the transition committee (signed and dated of 060323), said the president of ALGON.
