Expel Emefiele, HURIWA urges NASS

The Human Rights Writers Association has called on the National Assembly to use its legislative powers to expel the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The group made the call in a statement signed by its national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, on Sunday.

Onwubiko said the governor had shown signs of irredeemable arrogance and blatant disregard for constitutional provisions, adding that the National Assembly should not let Emefiele destroy the economy with his fiscal policies and draconian and anti-popular monetary policies.< /p>

Citing the apex bank's recent withdrawal limit policy, which the group described as "abhorrent and senseless", the group argued that if the chairman, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retired), could be impeached by the legislative arm, Emefiele should not be allowed to continue to show off and trample the National Assembly.

"Emefiele's arrogance and abuse of power has reached intolerable heights. He has wrecked Nigeria with loosely entrenched monetary policies, especially the withdrawal limits that make Nigeria look like to a communist state. He may argue that this will enable a cashless economy, but Nigeria does not yet have the infrastructure to support this.

"HURIWA demands that the National Assembly use its powers to compel Emefiele to suspend the policy, he is not bigger than all of Nigeria and if his monetary policy has the potential to destroy Nigeria and lead to loss of jobs and other unintended consequences, he must be called to order as he is not more powerful than all Nigerians.

“Rather than let Emefiele destroy the economy, the National Assembly should insist that he suspend the withdrawal limits which are draconian and anti-popular. The National Assembly must act decisively and prevent outlet operators from disappearing, creating opportunities for escalating sophisticated crimes in a country already indicted and whose security is at risk.

HURIWA also criticized the President for refusing to sack Emefiele, despite the latter's failure.

"Is Emefiele the sacred cow of Buhari? What business did the two have together so much that Emefiele was left in power even after failing miserably and falling even ventured into partisan politics by wanting to run for president as a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress, allegedly bought campaign buses and even went to court to stop his dismissal for engaging in partisan politics Even while serving as Governor of the CBN? Emefiele cannot be allowed to get away with this arrogance of power."
