Kirstie Alley: Emmy Cheers-winning actress dies of cancer aged 71

Actress Kirstie Alley, best known for starring in comedy Cheers in the 80s and 90s, has died of cancer at age 71, according to a family statement.

Alley won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for her role as bar manager Rebecca Howe in the popular television series.

The Kansas-born star has also appeared in the Look Who's Talking film franchise and the television sitcom Veronica's Closet.

His former teammates Ted Danson and John Travolta led the tributes, noting his warm heart and wicked humor.

"We are sad to inform you that our amazing mother , fierce and loving has passed away," her children wrote, in a statement that didn't specify what cancer she was suffering from, but said it was "only recently discovered."

"As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more incredible mother and grandmother", wrote -they continued, claiming that she was surrounded by her family when she died.

They also praise her "taste and passion for life, her children, his grandchildren and his many animals, without forgetting his eternal joy of creating".
