Kwara United pick Confederation Cup spot ahead of AITEO Cup final

Kwara United have been awarded the potential winner slot for the 2022 AITEO Cup due to the competition's failure to meet the deadline set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Ilorin-based club posted it on Twitter on Monday morning, clearly delighted to secure the continental ticket.

“Jubilation as @KwaraUnitedFC will play in the CAF Confederations Cup for finishing 4th in the #NPFL22 season. CAF published the participating club on Sunday night. @thenff chose @KwaraUnitedFC due to deadline CAF registration as the Aiteo Cup is still ongoing. The draws take place on Tuesday in Egypt."

Recall that CAF had previously indicated in a press release on Friday June 24 that all member associations had to send their representatives by Sunday July 31, but the Aiteo Cup tournament had just entered the eight last as at the time of the CAF deadline.

"The statutory deadline for Member Associations to submit entry applications on behalf of their clubs is extended to 31 July 2022."

As a result of this minor change in the order of CAF Nigeria representatives, all four clubs in the recently concluded 2021/2022 season have secured a place in the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup.

From September 9 to 11, Rivers United and Plateau United will play the first preliminary round of the Champions League.

Meanwhile second-placed Remo Stars and newly added third-placed Kwara United will face off for the Confederation Cup on the same day.
