Ladoja talks about Makinde's re-election

Former Oyo State Governor Rasheed Ladoja has congratulated Governor Seyi Makinde on his re-election.

Mr. Ladoja's congratulatory message was included in a statement he personally signed on Tuesday.

Mr. Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, had publicly opposed Mr. Makinde's candidacy for re-election.

He rallied against Makinde's second-term ambition following an alleged failure by the governor to honor a deal that inspired the coalition that backed him to win his first term in 2019.

Days before the election, the former governor endorsed Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and also urged his supporters in the state to rally support for the APC candidate.

But Mr. Ladoja's preferred candidate lost after winning a total of 256,685 votes behind Governor Makinde, who garnered a total of 563,756 votes.

Mr. Ladoja, in his congratulatory message, encouraged the governor to keep all his campaign promises as he begins his second term.

"Now the campaigns are over, the explosions are over, the various lies are over, the abuses are over, the curses are over, the deliberate misinterpretations are over, the scramble for spaces is over", a- he declared.

"All the dramatis personae left the stage with their laurels and blues, leaving you alone. What remains now are your promises and your harsh realities," he added.

"May God help you to succeed in the expectation of people, your satisfaction and fulfillment in this selfless work that awaits you."

Mr. Ladoja ruled the state between 2003 and 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He defected to Labor Zenith in December 2018.

He led the coalition that backed Mr. Makinde to win the 2019 election. But the coalition collapsed six months later, following accusations that Mr. Makinde had violated the agreement on slot-sharing of commissioners and other political appointees in his administration.

The coalition at the time included the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Zenith Labor Party (ZLP) and the PDP.

Under the deal claimed by coalition members, the PDP was to take 64% of the political appointees, the ADC 30%, the ZLP 5% and the SDP 1%.
