Lagos government closes school after student dies

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has closed Redeemers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba, following the death of a five-year-old student who allegedly drowned during a swimming lesson.

State Education Commissioner Ms. Folasade Adefisayo announced in a statement on Monday, adding that the school will remain closed pending an investigation into its operation and its procedures.

She said, "Lagos State Department of Education has closed Redeemers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba. The school will remain closed, pending further an administrative investigation into its operations and procedures and the conduct of its officials - in accordance with school safety standards and guidelines.

"The inquest follows the death of a five-year-old student, who is suspected of drowning during a swimming lesson while in school custody .

"Police are investigating the matter. A preliminary investigation by the Ministry's Education Quality Assurance Office showed that Redeemers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba, did not has not yet completed its registration and is therefore not yet an approved school.

“The ministry is concerned about student safety, hence the need to intervene. The school will remain closed until all required approval processes are completed. Parents are advised to take note of the closure and await the conclusion of the administrative inquiry."
