Lagos Labor Party gets new president as Salako steps down

The Labor Party has nominated Dayo Ekong as its president in Lagos State following the resignation of Kayode Salako from his post.

Mr. Salako had submitted his resignation letter at the party's "legal stakeholders meeting" on Tuesday.

The former president told ChannelsTV on Wednesday that he had resigned in order to contest the Oshodi-Isolo 1 constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

Mr. Salako resigned six months after being named party chairman in the state.

He also assumed the position of Special Advisor on Lagos Affairs and Liaison Operations to the National Chairman of the Party,

“We held our legal stakeholders meeting in Lagos yesterday (Tuesday),” he said.

“I voluntarily entrusted the management of party affairs to Ms. Dayo Ekong because I wanted to contest an election.

"I am the party's candidate for the House of Representatives seat in Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1. The election lasts about 40 days and I have to concentrate to meet the challenges."

Ms. Ekong, while accepting the new role, sought the support of party members.

"I want to assure you that the mandate will be inclusive and that no one will be left out. Let's all sit down and drop our swords.

“Let us support each other so that we can achieve the goal set and end political slavery in Lagos State.

"I know that together we will be in the name of Jesus. Victory is certain if we all unite in love and unity."

The Labor Party is one of 18 parties that will compete for the seats of Governor and State Speaker in the February 25 elections.

It is unclear how the new development would affect the performance of its gubernatorial candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, in the polls.

Achike Chude, a political analyst, noted that Salako's resignation was not "acrimonious".

"To be fair to him, his political ambition is high, he spends resources," he said.

"He spends a lot of energy going from place to place in the constituency in which he is running for the House of Representatives.

"He needs to talk to people, he needs to campaign to achieve his political ambition. He won't do that by remaining chairman of the Labor Party."
