Lagos Police warn parties against violence

Lagos State Police Commissioner Abiodun Alabi on Tuesday accused political parties of avoiding election violence by acting within the Electoral Act 2022 in the upcoming general elections .

Alabi made the statement at an event titled “Election Security Stakeholders Meeting” hosted by the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja area of the State.

The stakeholder meeting involved heads of state security officers, representatives of political parties, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the police, among other stakeholders of the State.

Alabi explained that people's confidence in the value of their vote depended primarily on the security and resilience of the infrastructure that made national elections possible.

“A free and fair election is the hallmark of democracy, and we, as key security actors during elections, have a responsibility to ensure that it happens. proceed in a peaceful and orderly manner. devoid of rancor, malevolence, robbery and brutality.

“To achieve this, we urge the leaders of all political parties to rededicate themselves to undertaking their campaigns and electoral activities within the precepts of the Elections Act 2022.

“In the same vein, during this electoral process, the police are asking political actors gathered here to commit to exposing electoral violence, hate speech and other negative tendencies. before, during and after the votes,” Alabi said.

Speaking further, CP said that political violence, hate speech, threats, political intolerance, disinformation and political extremism are powerful threats to democracy and national security.

He said, "I therefore challenge the leaders of political parties and candidates, who are essential guardians of our democracy, to show determined and patriotic leadership that will ensure a peaceful electoral process. and to develop a culture of political tolerance and a demonstration of political maturity by allowing healthy competition between them.”
