Lagos students hail reduction in tuition fees

The Youth and Student Directorate of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council has commended the Lagos State Government for reducing tuition fees at two institutions in the state.

A statement signed by Deputy Director of Youth and Student Affairs Eniola Opeyemi read: "News of the 65% tuition fee reduction at both Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University of Education respectively, feels like a soothing balm as the year draws to a close.

"Remember that student protests against the sudden increase in tuition fees by the management of universities and other higher education institutions nationwide is a pervasive scenario.

"However, here in Lagos, students did not have to apply for a reduction in tuition fees, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu knew full well how to arrange in advance. He stunned the students and parents of the aforementioned schools. A Christmas package, right? Universities management originally offered 195,000 naira for tuition fees before Sanwo -Olu, a man with a big heart, does not reduce the costs by 65%.“

Opeyemi added that the governor had done more in the field of education in a short time, including the birth of two universities; LASUED and LASUSTECH.

"As a student union leader, former coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students in South West Nigeria, I recalled the days of struggling against bad government policies in education; tuition hike protest, school reopening protest and struggle, suffering from ASUU/NASU/NLC strikes, state to state, but it's all up to the past."

“Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is the only Governor in Nigeria who cuts school fees without protest or even demand from stakeholders. Sanwo–Olu promptly pays lecturers, non-teaching staff and teachers. “
