LASTMA reacts to video showing officers driving against the tide

The video showing Lagos State Traffic Management Agency officers driving against the tide is old footage, the agency claimed.

The video, which was shared on social media on Friday, showed LASTMA officers in the agency's branded vehicle flouting traffic laws.

The agency's managing director, Bolaji Oreagba, said in a statement that the incident occurred in 2020.

The video surfaced following the recent public auction of over 100 vehicles seized for traffic violations. The state government's action drew mixed reactions from the public.

The video was originally posted by @Dagbofather on Friday via his Twitter account. Mr. Adedapo said he stopped the oncoming agency vehicle and insisted that it back up.

The video had over 3,000 engagements at the time of posting.

"I stopped them and backed them off. Little equity not bad. Put this one up for auction too, I get who's gonna buy it," he added.

Mr. Adedapo told PREMIUM TIMES that the video was recorded in October 2021.

LASTMA reaction

LASTMA admitted that its agents had flouted traffic laws and added that they had been sanctioned.

TEXEM Advert

The agency did not specify the nature of the sanction.

"The attention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has come to a viral video on 'Twitter' (@OmoGbajaBiamila) where our officers who drove against the tide ( one way) with an operational vehicle (RTM 08 LA Zone 25 Bariga) was blocked by a

private vehicle on Oworonsoki Bridge, Lagos,” the statement read.

“The Agency hereby categorically declares that the video of the video incident occurred in 2020 prior to the #EndSARS protest around Iyana-Oworo. All officers involved have been duly sanctioned by the Authority .

"The patrol van registered RTM 08 LA (Area 25 Bariga) seen in the viral video was among the LASTMA operational vehicles torched next to our office building by #EndSARS protesters in Iyana-Oworo, Lagos."< /p>

Mr. Oreagba urged the public to disregard the video which was "deployed to embarrass our hard-working team of officers".
