League Cup: Man City knock out defending champions Liverpool

Reigning Carabao Cup champions Liverpool were knocked out of this year's competition after a 3-2 loss to Manchester City in the Round of 16 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

The Reds won the competition last year, beating Chelsea in the final, and were hoping to retain the trophy again. But that ambition ended with defeat in Thursday's five-goal thriller.

Erling Haaland, a superstar missing in the just-concluded Qatar 2022 World Cup, showed he was well rested and ready to continue where he left off before the break for the Mundial.

With his first goal just nine minutes into the game, the Norwegian set the tone for this thrilling encounter.

Kevin De Bruyne kicked the ball into the Liverpool penalty area and the City striker edged past Joe Gomez to drive the ball home. With this strike, Haaland took his total for the season to an incredible 24 goals in 19 appearances.

Despite an early delay, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool made their comeback and in the 20th minute they equalized thanks to a calm finish from Fabio Carvalho.

The first half ended with the same score of 1-1, and the second half got off to a frantic start with African brothers Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Salah quickly scoring a goal for their teams .

As Mahrez made it 2-1 for City in the 47th minute, Salah quickly made it 2-2 just a minute later.

After some missed chances from both sides, Nathan Ake appeared with the fifth goal of the entertaining encounter as City took a 3-2 lead.

With over 30 minutes of action still on the cards, many would have thought there would be more goals from either side, but that was not the case.

City held on for the 3-2 win that took them through to the quarter-finals. Pep Guardiola's side are specialists in the Coupe de la Ligue, having won six of the last nine editions, and they could just extend their dominance by securing a seventh title under the Spaniard.

The other quarter-finalists are Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Leicester City, Charlton Athletic, Newcastle, Southampton and Wolves.
