Lekki Shooting: Ex-Army Spokesperson Opens Up About Inclusion In Peter Obi's Campaign Team

Ex-army spokesman John Enenche has reacted to outrage among Nigerian youth over his inclusion in the 2023 campaign council of Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Mr. Enenche, a retired major general, said in a statement on Friday that the country's youth were right to criticize his past comment on the Lekki Tollgate shooting, but urged them not to falter in their support for the candidate. p>

Young people on Wednesday picked Mr Enenche from the list of 1,234 members nominated to be removed from Mr Obi's campaign following his denial of killings of protesters by army personnel in October 2020.

He said in an interview at the time that video evidence of the murders reported on various platforms had been doctored.

Following the controversy that followed his inclusion in the LP campaign team, PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported the party's resolve to drop the former army spokesman and update the list.

“Dear compatriots, following my appointment to the Labor Party campaign council, there have been reactions on social media about my statement regarding a video shot at the scene of the ENDSARS incident at the Lekki Toll October 20, 2020.

"All who commented in any way were correct based on the information available to them and individual analysis. Personally and professionally, I have worked with the best interests of Nigerians at heart on the basis of the oath of allegiance I took during the commission of military service which is sacrosanct.

“I sincerely shared the pains of this breaking news through social media so to speak. On that note, I want to assure everyone that more effort will be made, so that all claims can be convincingly verified from appropriate sources,” Enenche said.

Mr. Obi, earlier in a post on Twitter, also admitted the mistake of including the former army officer's name among others. He vowed to do what is necessary and urged his followers to be patient.

“I have received several calls of concern following the publication of the Labor Party Presidential Campaign Council list. Admittedly, there have been omissions and erroneous entries in the list, hence the concerns In response, the Chairman of the Labor Party, in the presence of members of the NWC, addressed the issues at a press conference. In line with our commitment to accountability, responsiveness and transparency, an updated list will be released in due course. I plead for patience,” the presidential candidate said in a Twitter post.

However, Mr. Enenche, in his statement, did not indicate whether he resigned from the campaign team or not.

He however reiterated his support for Mr. Obi and urged Nigerians to do the same in the best interest of the country as it prepares for the 2023 elections.

“I believe that all obedient Nigerians among others who believe and work for a new Nigeria and to take back our country hold the same belief as I do.

"In this regard, I appeal to everyone in this endeavor to keep us focused on achieving this very important mission," he said.
