Liverpool 3-1 Man. City: Klopp finally gets his hands on the Community Shield

Liverpool won the first title of the new 2022/23 football season as the Reds beat defending Premier League champions Manchester City 3-1 thanks to a first-half goal from Trent Alexander- Arnold and two late goals. An 83rd-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah after Julian Alvarez pushed for City's equalizer and Darwin Nunez's first competitive goal in the 94th minute for the Reds put the shine on the win.

Jurgen Klopp has thus secured the only homegrown trophy remaining since moving to Liverpool in 2015 and the Reds for the first time since 2006. Liverpool started without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker while Pep Guardiola named new signing Kalvin Phillips, John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden on the bench.

Mohamed Salah created the first scoring chance of the game in the fourth minute when he passed Joao Cancelo, but his shot went into the side netting. As City controlled possession, Liverpool went straight, piercing City's press.

Andy Robertson should have done better with a header in the 14th minute, but he also found the side netting.

In the 19th game, Jordan Henderson's cross almost found Roberto Firmino in the box but Ederson had his fingertips to deflect the danger.

Two minutes later, Liverpool took the lead after concerted play outside City's penalty area. Salah found Alexander-Arnold on the edge and the Liverpool right-back's shot took a gash from Nathan Ake's header to nestle into the far post.

City's new number 9 Erling Harland got two quick chances in the 34th minute but his first shot was saved well by Adrian, but seconds later Bernardo Silva slotted in a cross he would have had to try to put his head on it, but he left. with his left foot. Missed opportunity.

There was a penalty shout when Riyad Mahrez was knocked to the ground by Thiago but referee Craig Pawson waved to play.

Mahrez and Grealish have been called off for Foden and summer signing Julian Alvarez. City substitute Alvarez came on from close range in the 70th minute after Adrian was robbed by Foden. There was a VAR check but it was given. It was Alvarez's first goal for City.

The game now hung in the balance as Klopp sent in Milner for Henderson and Harvey Elliott replaced striker Alexander-Arnold.

Another substitute, this time a red won the penalty that ultimately won the game. A Salah cost was headed by Nunez to Ruben Dias' outstretched right hand and after another VAR check the penalty was awarded.

Salah came forward and shot past Ederson for the game-winning goal. Robertson collected the ball from Bernardo Silva in the 87th minute and he opted to shoot when Salah and Luis Diaz were in space in the box. Nunez scored the goal his game deserved with a dipped header in the 94th after a superb header from Robertson.

Haaland still had a chance to collect one from City but the former Borussia Dortmund smashed his shot over the crossbar at the last minute. Guardiola has some issues but not as long as the season starts next weekend.
