Liverpool star snubbed as Luis Enrique reveals Spain's 26-man World Cup squad

Liverpool midfielder Thiago will not go to the World Cup with Spain.

The 31-year-old hasn't been included in La Roja's squad for the tournament in Qatar.

Coach Luis Enrique opted instead for Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Gavi, Pedri, Carlos Soler, Koke, Marcos Llorente, Pablo Sarabia and Dani Olmo in midfield.

Arguably the biggest omissions are David de Gea, Thiago and Sergio Ramos.

It was revealed last month that Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea would not go to Qatar.

He was not included in Enrique's 55-man squad submitted to Fifa, with the former Barcelona boss favoring five other 'keepers ahead of the Red Devils man'.

Although Thiago has struggled with injuries since joining Liverpool in 2020, many expected him to go to the World Cup.

Liverpool are easily a better side with the Spaniard in the side.

He has been limited to seven Premier League appearances this season after missing five games with a hamstring problem.

In his previous two seasons, Thiago only made 24 and 25 league appearances, due to his fitness issues.

"I have a great team roster," Enrique said.

"I decided last night with my team.

"We will have the same philosophy as in recent years."

"I think our rivals will see Spain among the candidates to win the tournament," added Enrique.

"There is no doubt what you will see in the World Cup. We will try to control the game, dominate and create more than our opponents."

Another Premier League player to miss is Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella shone for Brighton last season before moving for £62m to Stamford Bridge this summer.

He was one of many big-money signings for the Blues, but struggled to get started early in his career with the London club.

After a poor performance in Sunday's home loss to Arsenal, Cucurella was heavily criticized by Alan Shearer.

"It's embarrassing from a Chelsea perspective," Shearer said.

"So many players could have knocked him out, be it [Kai] Havertz or [Thiago] Silva. Goalkeeper [Edouard Mendy] has no chance. It wasn't even a great ball.

"Look at Cucurella in there with Xhaka. He's not moving at all. He's just holding Xhaka, there's nothing from him at all!"
