Lowry's painting back after auction 'win'

An 'iconic' painting by LS Lowry is once again on public display in Salford after being bought at auction for a record 7.8 milli ons of pounds.

The Lowry Arts Center bought Going to the Match from Christie's last month after the Players Foundation was forced to sell the 1953 work.

A donation from the Law Family Charitable Foundation enabled the gallery to preserve the work.

The painting has been rehung and is on public display again.

The Mayor of Salford, Paul Dennett, who led a campaign to keep work in the area, described the moment as a "true victory".

"Going to the Game is a quintessential and iconic painting by LS Lowry, and it should rightfully be among many Lowry paintings and drawings," said he declared.

"It's a real win to see the painting hanging here in The Lowry."
