The Labor Party led by Comrade Julious Abure has rejected the result of the local government elections in Edo State held on Saturday, as announced by the Independent State Election Commission.

The LP condemned the elections organized by the SIEC of Edo, describing them as another sad testimony to the extent to which a state government can descend trying to destroy the gains of democracy.

This is contained in a statement released Sunday by National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh in Abuja.

Ifoh quoted Abure as saying that democracy can only succeed when the authorities allow the votes of the people to count and the choice of voters to be respected.

He said, "Reports from our agents at most polling stations across the state confirmed that EDSIEC made deliberate efforts to frustrate voters by ensuring poll workers arrived late. at polling stations or did not show up. at all.

"In the few places where the election was held, insufficient ballot papers were brought in, without a single sheet of results.

“But in the end, the results were obtained and the candidates of the People's Democratic Party were elected.

He added, “Ahead of the elections, credible information reached us that the state government had no intention of holding elections, let alone credible ones.

“The EDSIEC that we assembled simply followed the instructions of the Government Chamber and announced an already prepared list of winners of the election.

“The Edo people and Nigerians deserve the best to represent them in government. What happened in Edo State is a travesty of democracy and it must not be allowed.

“We therefore call on the state government to also condemn the charade that occurred on Saturday, denounce its results and call for credible new elections.

“State Independent Electoral Commissions in Nigeria have failed to contribute to the development of democracy. They are only appendages of the state government and there is nothing independent about them.

“We therefore call on the National Assembly to abolish the commission and entrust the conduct of local elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission for proper management.

“The Independent State Electoral Commission has become an embarrassment to democracy in Nigeria. It is therefore time to remove them in order to restore reason in our popular politics. »
