Manchester City have come under fire from a skin cancer charity after fans were told they could not bring sunscreen to the Etihad Stadium.

City's Supporter Services team responded to a fan's request on Twitter ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Bournemouth, where temperatures reached 31C, saying: "Sunscreen will not be allowed at the stadium entrance.

"We advise fans to apply it before coming and to bring a hat and water."

Melanoma UK, the country's leading organization for melanoma patients, called the city's policy "disappointing" and "very worrying".

He said, "Really? You won't allow sunscreen in the stadium? What's the explanation?

“You must be aware of the increase in skin cancers and the danger of UVA & UVB? had melanoma.

"Your fan services team got it wrong. You can't expect a stadium full of fans (many of them children) not to have sunscreen with them.

“Help protect them – contact someone who can provide sunscreen inside the stadium. It's so disappointing."

The city has been contacted for comments.
