Mandy Moore wants to reprise her role as Lana in 'Princess Diaries 3'

It was January 2019 when we learned that "The Princess Diaries 3" was on the cards after Anne Hathaway casually confirmed "there's a script" just ready and waiting. At the time, the actor stopped by "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen" and shared the gossip about something we all want to know in secret. When asked if "The Princess Diaries 3" was in the works, Hathaway replied, "I want to do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it." Just to say, we had so many questions! Will Chris Pine be there? Is Fat Louie still alive? Will Raven-Symoné return? Can we expect to see another epic slumber party?

"We all really want this to happen but we don't want to do it unless it's perfect because we love it as much as you love it. . . . we're working on it," said Hathaway at the time.

A former cast member who really wants to come back? Mandy Moore. The actor told Drew Barrymore on the July 29 episode of the latter's eponymous talk show that she would happily reprise her role as Lana on "The Princess Diaries 3." "My character was kind of the nemesis of Anne Hathaway's character in the first movie, and she was so mean, I feel like there might not be a place for her" , said Moore.

But Barrymore did a really quick brainstorm on how that might work and suggested that maybe Lana could turn over a new leaf. "The other angle is, like, redemptive: she did a 180, she turned her life around, and she and Mia became really good friends. So, I'd be all for it," Moore said.

Unfortunately, there have been no major updates on the film, although Andrews - aka Queen Dowager Clarice - said during an appearance on 'The Talk' in 2020 that she was still interested. "I'm getting terribly old and grumpy. I don't know if it's the right time, but I think working with Annie would be nice again. And, of course, I'd be all for it," Andrews said. She added that director Garry Marshall (who died in 2016) would be missed, describing him as "the cogs in everything". The actress was recently nominated for an Emmy for her voice work as Lady Whistledown in "Bridgerton."

Only time will tell if "Princess Diaries 3" will become a reality. And if so, we know one thing: it won't be late; we'll all just be ahead.
