Many schools haven't recruited teachers for 20 years - NUT regrets Cross River conditions

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Titus Amba, has claimed that in 20 years a large number of primary and secondary schools have not recruited teachers, although a number growing number of people are retiring.

He expressed fear that soon many Nigerian schools will be left without teachers.

He spoke in Calabar when he ordered buses for the NUT Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society's transportation program.

"If you look at the statistics, you will see that a good number of schools in Nigeria have not recruited teachers for the past twenty years. This is the situation we have found ourselves in.< /p>

"It will interest you to know that a good number of state governments are not recruiting teachers commensurate with those who are retiring.

“When teachers retire and there is no commensurate recruitment or replacement, the school system will be left without teachers in our school.”

He posited that if the government cannot recruit, it should extend the years of service of in-service teachers.

Amba, however, commended the federal government for implementing and delivering on its promises to primary and secondary teachers.

“We are proud, as Nigerian teachers, to identify with the leaders of this country. As far as we are concerned, as primary and secondary teachers, we got what we want from the president of this country and those things are not just increases in the year of service for teachers but there are a lot of other benefits like retirement years for teachers 60 to 65 and 35 to 40 for service, issuance of special salary, special allowances, loans, scholarships which are enshrined in these same endorsements which the President has graciously bestowed upon Nigerian teachers.

"So we are very grateful to him. He has done his part. We now await the Gazette's release so that it will now become a working document for all levels of government."

Amba has instructed other NUT chapters to emulate Cross River State.

State NUT Chairman Gregory Olayi in his remarks lamented that teachers in Cross River are paid a salary once every two months.

He disapproved of the mistreatment of teachers in the state, stressing that the condition of teachers is most regrettable.

"As a union, we went through a lot of stress to attend one activity or another. We had the opportunity to come together to form a co-op. I was motivated to tell them, let's use this to buy vehicles to move our members from one place to another so that the money we used to rent vehicles always comes back to us and our members don't suffer much anymore.
