Marc Bouwer unveils haute couture collection with film

TOUT AU BON TEMPS: In another example of how some designers are no longer constrained by seasonal fashion calendars, Marc Bouwer has chosen to show off his latest haute couture collection with an in-person screening of a 10 minute film showcasing her sparkling dresses, evening looks and a touch of sportswear.

To give the unveiling an extra dimension, some of the models who featured in the film attended the event and cocktail party dressed in Marc Bouwer. But the designer didn't want to reveal his latest designs until the film started, so they wore looks from his previous collections. About 110 people showed up for the rally, which included cocktail parties at the Washington Street outpost of Soho Works in New York City.

Bouwer said on Monday the timing was in line with July being Europe's haute couture month. All models are bespoke and will be custom ordered with prices starting at $7,000 and reaching around $20,000. While the collection is mainly intended for evening wear, there are a few sportswear elements, including a three-piece suit and a miniskirt, a tight jumpsuit with cropped trousers and another jumpsuit with bell bottoms.

Bouwer said he told attendees that he was often asked what the theme of a collection was and that he thought "you don't necessarily need a theme to make great clothes. ".

That said, the designer admitted that his 2022-23 haute couture collection is "an ode to women in all their guises - from girl to goddess, dominatrix to diva, warrior to waif. .." he said. "My wife is fearless and fun and she comes in all colors."

In addition to thanking the models for "the many hours of fitting" required for the collection and the filming of this one, Bouwer singled out hairdresser Denis Boyd, make-up artist Jordan Sawyer and photographer Duke Winn, who has collaborated with Bouwer in the past, thank you.

The designer chose someone close to home to orchestrate the film from start to finish. Her husband, Pedro Oberto, directed, filmed, edited and soundchecked the short. Winn shot the stills for the film and acted as second cameraman. Before Friday evening, only Bouwer, Oberto and company president Paul Margolin had seen the film, which was shot at Pier 59, in its entirety. For additional sound effects, audible chimes, footsteps, whispers, echoes, bells, and breath traces have been added.

Earlier this year, Bouwer also used his artistic skills in a different way. A few of his Marilyn Manson paintings were brought to life and incorporated into HBO's two-part series "Phoenix Rising," a documentary produced and directed by the designer's neighbor and friend Amy Berg.
