Maritime patrols reduced piracy in eastern Nigerian waters – Dewu

Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dewu, the outgoing Eastern Navy Commander (FOC), revealed that the effective and sustained patrols of the command's maritime area of responsibility, MAR, have gone a long way in reducing piracy in eastern waters of Nigeria.

He revealed this when he handed over to his successor, Rear Admiral Olusola Oluwagbire at Eastern Naval Command Headquarters in Calabar.

He said his command undertook several “demining and swamp buggy operations” in the backwaters.

“Such operations have greatly reduced piracy in Nigeria’s maritime domain,” he said.

He informed that his command had arrested 27 vessels involved in illegal bunkering and theft of crude oil, as well as 294 illegal refinery sites which were disabled.

He said the arrests took place between February 4, 2022 and April 11, 2023, when he was the commanding officer of the ENC.

"It should be noted that the command has also registered significant achievements in the development of infrastructure in all bases and establishments under the command".

"In addition, at all bases and units, commanders and senior officers have embarked on a series of projects aimed at improving personnel welfare and safety.
