Max Verstappen reacts after breaking new record with Mexican GP victory

Max Verstappen has said he will try to win more Grands Prix after breaking the Formula 1 record for most wins in a single season. Victory in Mexico was the 14th event the Dutchman has won this year, making him the absolute holder of the distinction he previously shared with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen led the race from the lights out to the checkered flag after taking pole position yesterday, securing the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton by more than 15 seconds. The victory helped the Dutchman to his 14th victory of the season, setting the record for most wins in a single season in Formula 1 - surpassing the precedent he had previously set with Schumacher and Vettel.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen insisted he was aiming for more wins as he sought to extend his record.

"It's been an amazing year so far," he said when asked about his record. "We definitely appreciate it and will try to do more."

It had looked like Hamilton could battle for victory in the opening stages of the Grand Prix as Mercedes opted for a different tire strategy to that of Red Bull. However, the hard tire failed to respond as the team had hoped to allow the 25-year-old to manage his mids to come home under little pressure.

Verstappen admitted he felt holding the lead at turn one was key to how his race went, with the Grand Prix then becoming a bit of a tire management task.

“It helped me a lot for the rest of the race to stay ahead on the first lap,” he explained. "Of course we are also on a different strategy to the cars around us. An incredible result, the pace of the car was once again very nice. We had to be careful with our tires because it was a very long stint on the medium, but we made it work."

Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez finished on the podium in his home race after passing Mercedes driver George Russell in the opening corners.

The 32-year-old is understandably hugely popular in Mexico and his presence in the top three has encouraged wild scenes within the crowd.

Verstappen was keen to praise the atmosphere the fans helped create over the race weekend and admitted he loves racing at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

“We had a lot of people,” he said. "It's amazing. It's an amazing atmosphere and we love coming here."
