Medical implants may one day be made of CBD or polycannabinoids, new study suggests

CBD may one day be used in medical implants according to a new study published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal by the American Chemical Society, reports phys.org.

Poly cannabinoids: CBD-based bioplastics

The bioplastic called poly(lactic acid), or PLA, has become a popular option for sustainable plastics because it's made from corn and sugar cane instead of fossil fuels. CBD, the non-psychotropic component of cannabis and hemp, has a chemical structure that translates into a "good building block" for PLA that could replace conventional plastics for medical use.

Researchers Gregory Sotzing, Lakshmi Nair and their colleagues performed a condensation reaction with adipoyl chloride, also used to create nylon, and either CBD or cannabigerol (CBG ), closely related, to make a new bioplastic. In addition, they studied the properties of polymers.

“Neither CBD nor CBG polyesters were cytotoxic. Unlike conventional bioplastic PLA, CBD polyester had antioxidant activity,” according to the study. “The polymeric CBD had a wide melting temperature range and extensibility. To show its ability to function like a plastic, the researchers shaped it into the shape of a hemp leaf with a mold. »

Sotzing said the future goal of his start-up Polycannabinoid Therapeutics Rx is to design anti-inflammatory and analgesic bioplastics.
