Medusa Festival: One dead as high winds cause stage to collapse in Spain

A man died and at least 40 others were injured when high winds caused parts of a stage to collapse at a festival in Spain early Saturday.

< p class="ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00">Footage shows festival-goers running in panic as others continue to party at the event in Cullera, south of Valencia.

The popular electronic music festival Medusa was subsequently suspended.

The dead was in his 20th birthday, according to local media. Three of the injured suffered severe trauma.

Eyewitnesses spoke of a sudden sandstorm hitting the festival site.

The Spanish meteorological agency reported wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h (50 mph) in the eastern coastal region of the country at the time.

"We are in a state of shock," one of the participants told Spanish media. "It could have been me, it could have been anyone",

In a statement on Facebook, the organizers said they were "devastated and saddened by what happened this morning".

They said "high, high winds" around 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT) caused damage infrastructure on site, and a decision was immediately made to leave the area.
