Merson backs Brighton to beat Spurs with 'crack-hiding' series of results set to end

Paul Merson has tipped Brighton to beat Tottenham this weekend after impressing Roberto De Zerbi's side against Liverpool last week.

Antonio Conte's men were humiliated at Arsenal on Saturday, losing the North London derby 3-1.

It ended their unbeaten start to the campaign, while Arsenal remained top of the Premier League with seven wins and one loss after eight games.

Tottenham haven't been too impressive this season despite going seven games without losing.

And former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes defeat at Brighton could prove their invincibility was 'hidden'.

"Tottenham looked shaken against Arsenal and just as they were trying to get back into the game it was half-time and that gave the Gunners full control," he said told Sportskeeda.

"I don't know what Emerson Royal was doing, he's not good enough and his side were hampered by their local rivals because of his red card."

Brighton scored an impressive point against Liverpool at Anfield last week with Leandro Trossard scoring a hat-trick.

It was De Zerbi's first game in charge following the departure of Graham Potter, and Merson impressed, backing the Seagulls to beat Spurs 2-0 on Saturday night.

"I think Brighton will win this game, I liked what I saw against Liverpool. They dominated the Reds at Anfield and came away with a well deserved point thanks to a hat-trick from Leandro Trossard.< /p>

"Roberto de Zerbi has created the first impression and I'm delighted to see what Brighton can do under his tutelage.

"Dejan Kulusevski has been a big miss for Tottenham, they're a much better team when he plays. Richarlison has had a decent start to life at his new club, but with all due respect, Spurs look much better with Kulusevski on the pitch and Richarlison manages to run with tired legs.

"Tottenham fans have expressed their frustration in recent weeks and that's what happens when you don't win a few games because it's a matter of results at the end of the day.

"Having said that, Antonio Conte has made Spurs a much better team and he is a world-class manager who has won many trophies across Europe.

"If you play three at the back, your wingers have to be phenomenal, as is the case with Chelsea.

"With Tottenham, however, Emerson Royal isn't good enough and tends to struggle when he's not around. I like Ivan Perisic, but he's not getting any younger, so Conte has a thing or two. two to think about.

"Their midfielders also sometimes play too cautiously, so you could say the results erased the cracks at the start of the season for Tottenham."
