Mertesacker focused on Arsenal despite Kroos labeling him 'perfect' for Germany job

Former Germany defender Per Mertesacker insists he has his hands full at Arsenal and is not considering the possibility of his country appealing.

Mertesacker is Arsenal's academy manager but has been branded 'the perfect man for the job' as Germany seek a new national team manager.

That is the view expressed this week by Real Madrid star Toni Kroos, Mertesacker's former international team-mate.

Mertesacker, speaking to German broadcaster Sky Sport on Saturday during a charity ice hockey match to benefit his Per Mertesacker Foundation, spoke of his enjoyment of playing his role in England.

The national team role became vacant following the departure of long-time starter Oliver Bierhoff following Germany's second consecutive World Cup group stage exit.

"I'm super happy in England and I'm in charge of the youth academy. There's a lot to do there," said Mertesacker, who earned 104 caps for Germany.

"We are very committed and try to introduce young talents, but also to give them certain values. This is very, very important to me."

On the DFB's position, he added: "I haven't been spoken to yet, so I don't want to speculate. We are all interested in German football and having a lot to offer to the future."
