Military goods and cash found in Tukur Mamu's house – SSS

Nigeria's secret police, the State Security Service (SSS), said they recovered military uniforms and a large amount of cash from Tukur Mamu's home and office.

The recovery follows his arrest at Aminu Kano International Airport on Wednesday.

Mr. Mamu, a newspaper publisher, negotiated the release of some of the hostages during the March 2022 train abduction in Kaduna.

Mr. Mamu was previously arrested by Interpol in Egypt on his way to the small Hajj in Saudi Arabia. He was forced to return home to undergo further interrogation by the Nigerian authorities.

The SSS, in a statement by its spokesman, Peter Afunanya, said the offending items were found after its men carried out a search of the publisher's properties.

"So far, the appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu's residence and office.

"During the process, compromising items, including military equipment, were recovered.

"Other items include large amounts in various currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments. As further investigations continue, Mamu will certainly have a day in court," he said.

Mr. Mamu had several weeks ago stepped down as chief negotiator in securing the release of hostages from the Kaduna train abduction. He accused the Nigerian government of threatening his life.
