Spokespersons for defense, army, air force, navy and force headquarters declined to comment on the security issue of the railway lines in the country, particularly that of the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, following the release of the last 23 kidnapped victims of the March 28 terrorist attack, contacted by our correspondent on Friday.
However, a military source at Defense Headquarters confirmed to our correspondent that some form of negotiation and kinetic operations took place between the federal government and the kidnappers leading to the release abductees.
He, however, urged citizens not to worry about the details of the backdoor events leading to the release of the last 23 victims of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
The source said: "It is true that there have been negotiations through the back door, however, I don't think the details should be an issue at this time. The thing more important is that these people were held hostage for more than six months and that the Defense Headquarters, in collaboration with other security agencies in a committee set up by the President, was able to obtain their release.
"In the flow of operations, there are what we call kinetic and non-kinetic operations, and this was the non-kinetic operations that were conducted to ensure that these people were released. However, when the time comes, the details will be given. »
Transport Minister Mu'azu Sambo, during a press briefing with reporters in Abuja on Friday, said he was unsure of the exact date for the resumption of the Abuja-Kaduna rail service, it was as he said the ministry should put security measures in place to ensure a repeat of the March 28 attack would not take place, before resuming rail service Abuja-Kaduna.
"There is a committee made up of retired military generals and senior retired officials who assisted the military and security agencies through the process of securing the release of these former This government categorically does not support or approve of the payment of a ransom, no kobo was paid in exchange for the release of these 23 hostages and the others as well."
Speaking on the resumption of rail service, he said, "Instead of putting the lives of Nigerians at risk, we will instead shut down the rail service, we also could not resume in all honesty knowing the type of trauma the victims and their families went through.
“We have a long and short term plan. Now, I can tell you that we will be resuming very soon, but to resume rail service, we need to put measures in place to ensure that in the future such an incident will never happen in this country. »
