Ministerial list: New ministries could be created – Gbajabiamila

President Bola Tinubu's administration could create new ministries from existing ones, Femi Gbajabiamila, the president's chief of staff, said Thursday in Abuja.

The ministerial list containing 28 candidates was submitted to the National Assembly today by Mr. Gbajabiamila on behalf of the President and was read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

''Mr. President intends to separate portfolios or restructure ministries in such a way that you might hear of new ministries that were not stand-alone ministries before. So the process continues.’’

The 28 appointed ministers are Abubakar Momoh, Yusuf Tuggar, Ahmed Dangiwa, Hannatu Musawa, Uche Nnaji, Betta Edu, Doris Aniche Uzoka, David Umahi and Nyesom Wike.

The others are Badaru Abubakar, Nasiru Ahmed El-Rufai, Ekperipe Ekpo, Nkeiruka Onyejocha, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, Stella Okotette, Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, Bello Goronyo, Dele Alake and Lateef Fagbemi.

Others include Muhammad Idris, Olawale Edun, Waheed Adebayo Adelabu, Iman Suleiman Ibrahim. Ali Pate, Joseph Utsev, Abubakar Kyari, John Enoh and Sani Abubakar Danladi.

Mr. Gbajabiamila said the candidates were chosen after undergoing a strict personal screening by the president.

Second group of ministers to come

He said a second part comprising 13 names would be sent to the assembly, adding that it was part of the process of having a cabinet for administration.

‘As you know, he had 60 days from the inauguration, as stipulated in the constitution. He fulfilled this requirement of the constitution by submitting 28 names today.

''As his letter indicated and was read on the Senate floor, the remaining names, of which it is unclear how many, probably about 12, possibly 13, will be forwarded to the Senate in the coming days .

''As for the nominees themselves, and as I said, Mr. President has taken his time to sift through those names,'' he said.

Lack of wallets

The CoS said the president decided to follow tradition by not attaching the candidates' portfolios in the letter to the Senate to make room for the exams.

“As good as it sounds, it forces the president to classify a person in one office or the other. So what happens if you change your mind, do you then bring the person back for retesting because the president is free to change his mind?

''For example, if I decide I want someone as Minister of Labour, and after sending the name, later I decide that this person would actually be better off with another portfolio...
