Disappeared Former ASUU President Dipo Fasina 'Jingo' Found in Turkey

A former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dipo Fasina, popularly known as "Jingo", who was reported missing earlier on Sunday, has been found.

Mr. Fasina, 76, has reportedly been missing since Saturday July 1.

Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed the development of PREMIUM TIMES in a message shared with our reporter on Sunday.

NIDCOM also tweeted the development, while praising the Nigerian High Commission in Turkey for the collaborative efforts to locate the researcher.

The organization wrote on its official Twitter account that Mr. Fasina had been found at the airport and would be on his way to Nigeria on Monday.

NIDCOM wrote: "The Commission for Nigerians in Diaspora, in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Turkey, has managed to locate Professor Fasina, who disappeared for a few days at Istanbul Airport during a connection on a return flight.

"Mr. Fasina, 76, was traveling to Algeria when he allegedly missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey."

The agency commended the High Commission's office for quickly dispatching its officials to the airport.

About Fasina

A learned scholar, grassroots activist and trade unionist, Mr. Fasina taught philosophy for 34 years to the delight of countless students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OUA), Ile-Ife, which he joined in 1979 after returning from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned his doctorate.

ASUU trustee and chairman of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition of labor movements and civil societies championing pro-mass struggles in Nigeria, Mr. Fasina is from the Ashogbon royal family of Lagos.< /p>

He was nicknamed Jingo by his students as the favorite name he used to cite examples in his crowded classes.

He was also credited with founding the Department of Philosophy at Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), where he allegedly donated his rights to establish a library.

Since his retirement from the OAU, Mr. Fasina has taught philosophy at some Nigerian universities.
