Muslim groups celebrate World Hijab Day in Lagos

A coalition of around 18 Muslim organizations held a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday in commemoration of World Hijab Day 2023 with the theme "Progress, Not Oppression".

During the event, speakers representing the various member organizations spoke on issues that still need to be addressed despite the progress made so far with the Supreme Court ruling of June 17, 2022 which gave victory in hijabis and a subsequent circular from the Lagos State Government. in this regard.

Those who spoke include Executive Director, Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative, Mutiat Orolu-Balogun; Women Affairs Secretary, Nasrul-Lahi-li-Fathi Society (NASFAT), Lagos Zone 2, Alhaja Aishat Busari; and Senior Administrator, Muslim Public Affairs Center (MPAC).

The executive director of the Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative, Mutiat Orolu-Balogun, said that although the hijab was banned for Muslim women more than 1,400 years ago, "we continue to see how it is still more relevant today".

According to Orolu-Balogun, "nudity marked a distinctive feature of pre-civilization, so adopting modesty in dress is a progression."

She described the hijab for Muslim women as the fulfillment of a divine command "which is further guaranteed by Article 38 of the 1999 Constitution".
