Former Federation Cabinet Secretary Babachir Lawal has called a "disastrous mistake" the decision of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to appoint Senator Kashim Shettima as running mate .

Lawal delved into the controversy that followed the party's Muslim-Muslim ticket in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Lawal said he saw the decision coming and expressed his reservations to the promoters long before the announcement was made.

He said he suspected Tinubu is currently surrounded by sycophants who would lie to him and slander others to curry favor with him.

"The result is that they played on his long-term ambition to be president and turned it into a kind of desperation and crescendo that easily justifies this satanic recourse to a Muslim ticket -Muslim. This is the calamity that befell my friend,” Lawal said.

He added: "It seems that the gods want to destroy the APC and its presidential candidate and have chosen the instrumentality of the northern Muslim governors and their super ambitious tool and Kashim Ibrahim at this end.

"Alhaji Kashim Shettima is a Greek gift from the northern governors to Tinubu. I advise Bola to make sure that Kashima's two hands are always in full view and empty."

He warned Tinubu that his decision would have consequences, adding that some of them are that Christians will revolt against the APC to seriously jeopardize the chances of his election.

"Now tell me which Christian will vote for the APC with the following gear: Muslim Presidential Candidate (Lagos), Muslim Vice Presidential Candidate (Borno), Muslim National President (Nasarawa), National Muslim Vice President (Borno), Muslim President (Katsina); Muslim Senate Speaker (Yobe); Muslim Speaker (Lagos); Muslim Vice President (Plateau) etc,” he added .

Party leaders resign

Some party leaders have already started to quit over the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

In Rivers State, a former party gubernatorial candidate, Tonye Princewill, dumped the party, citing the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

"The decision (Muslim-Muslim ticket) could be described as a decision that smacks of arrogance and a complete disrespect towards us APC Christians," Ajobena said.

Furthermore, a coalition of northern Christians within the party warned against the ticket.

The organization which included Christian politicians in the 19 northern states in the APC, said they would not go against their conscience and faith to campaign for a ticket muslim-muslim.

The organization made its position known in a statement issued Tuesday in Abuja. It was signed by their president, Professor Doknan Sheni; and Secretary General Ishaya Bauka.

Meanwhile, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya backed the decision which he said would ease the party's navigation to victory in the presidential elections.

His position was contained in a statement by the Director General, Press Affairs, Government House, Ismaila Misilli.

Furthermore, the group chapters of Tinubu Mandate, Ondo and Ekiti States have declared that there is nothing wrong with the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
