Naira Notes: EFCC and Benue Police debunk viral video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Makurdi's office and the Benue State Police Command have debunked the report on social media of the alleged discovery of old naira banknotes in the capital.< /p>

The video shows bags of old naira notes discovered in a large container around Wadata market on Tuesday.

But an anti-corruption agency official who did not want to be mentioned as he was not authorized to speak said the office obtained information about bags of old naira notes and deployed his men there, but discovered they were condemned Central Bank of Nigeria notes.

He said: "It is true that we heard information about old naira notes and then we went to court to get a search warrant. On arriving there we found these condemned naira notes .

"The owner of the old naira notes said he bought them from the CBN. The old notes were cut into pieces and pressed, it's not money at all.

"I will send you photos of the contents of the bags that were discovered for you to see," the official told our correspondent on the phone Tuesday evening.

Also in a statement released in the final hours of Tuesday, the State Police Command called the report unsubstantiated.

According to the statement issued by the Command Spokesperson, Catherine Anene, the alleged naira banknotes were wasted papers obtained from the CBN.

The statement read in part: "On December 13, 2022, around noon, information was received at a police division, Makurdi, that hidden naira notes were recovered from the police barracks, Wadata.< /p>

"Police detectives sent to the scene to investigate recovered wasted papers from a shop near Wadata Police Barracks, Makurdi.

"The owner of the store, Mr. Isah Suleiman, was invited for questioning and he presented a license issued to him by the CBN for waste management.

"He added that these wasted papers were usually collected from CBN and made into mosquito repellents. The investigation was extended to CBN for confirmation."
