The Nigerian Navy has taken delivery of two new ships to help it increase its capabilities to protect the country's maritime domain, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, said on Saturday.

Matawall, who did not specify the number of ships recently purchased by the Navy, said the rigs would also be of immense help in the ongoing fight against crude oil theft, illegal refining , pipeline vandalism and piracy.

A statement on Saturday evening from the ministry's director of press, Victoria Agba-Attah, said Matawelle began this during the passing out parade of Batch 34 of the Naval Basic Training School trainees Nigerian in Onne, Port Harcourt.

It read: “The Minister of State for Defense hailed the efforts of the Nigerian Navy to acquire new platforms to enhance its combat power against crime and illegalities in territorial waters Nigerian and Gulf of Guinea.

“The newly acquired rigs would serve to increase the dominance and influence of the Nigerian Navy in the fight against crude oil theft, illegal refining, pipeline vandalism, piracy and illegal fishing activities , undeclared and unregulated.

"The new platforms would further expand the scope and coverage of the Nigerian Navy's patrol capabilities in backwaters and inland waterways, FOB LEKKI, FOB EKPE, OGUTA Naval Base, NOP TARKWA BAY and NOP SHAGUNU which have recently been created. »

Addressing the 1,865 trainees in Batch 34, the Minister instructed them to stick firmly to the core values ​​of the Nigerian Navy.
