Navy recovers weapons and destroys boat loaded with crude stolen from Bayelsa

The Nigerian Navy said on Sunday that it had disabled a boat laden with suspected stolen crude in Bayelsa State, south-south Nigeria.

He also reported that troops from the Navy Ship SOROH (NNS SOROH) recovered two AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62 mm.

The commander of NNS SOROH, Olushina Ojebode, a commodore, said this during a press conference in Yenagoa.

He said NNS SOROH troops, while on a sea patrol in the Gbaram community of Agbadam-Foropa, made contact with six gunmen in a speedboat who attempted to attack the troops.

Troops, he said, overpowered the gunmen in an ensuing firefight, causing them to flee.

He listed the items recovered from the gunmen, including two AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines, 133 7.62mm rounds and a small tecno phone.

The commander said that troops during an anti-theft of crude oil operation in South Ijaw discovered a wooden boat loaded with illegal crude oil.

The boat, he said, had been disabled in accordance with applicable regulations and standard operating procedure.

He said that with successful operations in Tebidaba, Furopa and Ezetu, combing through Bayelsa's maritime environment for oil thieves, illegal refinery operators and miscellaneous crimes was not not negotiable.

Mr. Ojebode ensured the Navy's commitment to providing security in Nigeria's maritime domain as mandated by the Chief of Naval Staff, Ikechukuwu Ogalla, a Rear Admiral.

He warned those involved in illegal activities to rethink and seek a legitimate source of sustenance or face the brunt of force.

While commending the troops for their bravery and professionalism, Mr. Ojebode urged residents of the state to provide credible information on the activities of criminals to security agencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commander then took a five-minute boat ride across Epie Creek to Famgbe in Yenagoa, where troops destroyed the local boat used for the robbery oil.
