NDC instructs Niger Delta states on 2023 flood alert

The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has drawn the attention of governments, communities and citizens of South-South states to the early warning of the 2023 floods.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have announced that this year's floods could be worse than in 2022.

A statement Tuesday by NDC spokesman Mudiaga Ogboru recalled similar warnings issued last year before devastating floods swept through the region.

He said the authorities' lack of preparedness resulted in loss of life and increased hardship from which many have yet to recover.

Ogboru advised states and community leaders to educate citizens about flooding, how to prepare, and likely evacuation, among other things.

"Hopefully the government will fulfill its main responsibilities this time around," the organization noted.

"Everyone must be on deck to ensure that the suffering of those who will be affected is mitigated and loss of life is completely eliminated wherever possible."
