NDLEA arrests teen bound for Europe with methamphetamine consignment in Abuja

Officers from the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 19-year-old student, Nnamani Daberechi, for attempting to export 7.2 kg of methamphetamine concealed in crayfish.

Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said so in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr. Babafemi said the suspect was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while traveling to Europe for undergraduate studies.

He said the suspect was intercepted on July 15 during an exit clearance of passengers from Turkish Airlines flight TK 0624.

"While being questioned by officers, Daberechi claimed that he was a student traveling to Cyprus for studies.

"But after a thorough search of his luggage, he was found in possession of 7.2kg of a whitish substance carefully concealed in a bag of crayfish.

“A field test of the substance, however, came back positive for methamphetamine,” he said.

Similarly, agents from the agency's Port of Tincan Command intercepted a 250-pound shipment from Colorado on July 11.

Me Babafemi, who described the drug as a strong strain of cannabis, was concealed in bags hidden in a pile of used vehicle parts.

This, he said, was on the floor of a container marked FCIU 8459700, containing three units of used vehicles imported from Toronto, Canada.

"Based on intelligence, the agency had requested a 100% examination of the container, which arrived at the port's TICT terminal on June 14

“A joint review with Nigeria Customs, DSS and other stakeholders on Tuesday July 11 led to the discovery of 233 packages of the illicit substance.

"It was hidden in travel bags on the floor of the container, covered with spare parts from used vehicles.
