NEDC is building 18 mega schools in the northeast to counter extremism – Official

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) says it has started building 18 mega-schools in the sub-region.

Commission Director General Mohammed Alkali who said this during a media conference with media officials in Maiduguri, Borno State, said the motive was to fight extremism .

He said the commission has also established the Center for the Study of Violent Extremism at the University of Maiduguri, established an ICT center in the 18 senatorial districts that make up the sub-region and provided interventions to schools and colleges.< /p>

“The mega-schools are being built at a total cost of N21.6 billion. The schools are closed and each of them will have sixteen classrooms for 1,200 students in each of the schools. We are also building six labs in each of the schools and a hostel with a capacity of 480 students,” Mr. Alkali said.

He added that the commission has established an “Educational Endowment Fund for building human capital in the region through scholarships, short term capacity building, improvement of basic education, etc. N6 billion seed capital, replenished with 10% annual budget dedicated to the education sector."

Coming on the Center for Study of Violent Extremism, the chief executive said it was built to serve as a center for scholars to research the insurgency and train people on how to contain extremism.

Mr. Alkali said the NEDC has projects at every college in the North East.
