Neville: It's a real achievement for Man Utd to spend a billion pounds and be this bad

Gary Neville has been infuriated by Manchester United's dismal performance in the 4-0 thrashing by Brentford on Saturday, suggesting it's a 'real feat' to be as bad as them with the money they have 'they spent.

Erik ten Hag's debut in the Premier League was a disaster, with a 4-0 defeat in the capital leaving United at the bottom of the Premier League.

United crumbled in a dismal 35 minutes as Brentford put United apart and left the vultures running in circles after a loss to Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford last weekend.

With Liverpool next in the Premier League, things look grim for United and, amid a struggle to land targets like Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, Neville took aim at those responsible in a fiery post-game tirade.< /p >

"Manchester United have known for eight to 10 months that they need to rebuild the squad for the summer. Ralf Rangnick [interim manager last season] described it as open-heart surgery ", he told Sky Sports.

"Not getting players in early - the quality of players, the number of players - that Ten Hag needed is disconcerting and hard to forgive.

"It's not a stalled market: the teams have done their job. Every club seems to have a plan and Manchester United's seems to be: 'Let's just look at the Dutch league or the players who have worked under Ten Hag".

"It's not a strategy, you can't do that. It was 15 years ago. You have to have identified the players and the work has been done with the agents.

"Yes, of course, you always try to please the manager if he has a player he has very good contact with. But the one he has good contact with, they can't come in: Frenkie de Jong .

"It's a real feat to spend a billion pounds and be this bad. It doesn't take much to dismantle this Manchester United team. It just takes a bit of organisation, a bit of fight, and you're in. If you bump them a bit and score a goal, they're flaky like you wouldn't believe.

Back-to-back defeats at the start of the season have increased pressure on United to sign additional signings before the transfer window closes on September 1, but Neville fears it will be difficult to attract players.

“United in the past have always responded to the anger of fans with money and spending in the transfer market. The problem is that now nobody wants to take their money. It's a huge problem. They can't spend the money.

"If you are a player watching this performance in the first half, how do you feel about coming to this club?"
