James May has told the BBC that another motoring series with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond is unlikely.

The trio had huge success on Top Gear and then The Grand Tour, with the final episode of the Amazon show set to arrive in September.

Requested by Amol Rajan for the Today podcast if he had plans for another series or episode, May responded. : "We're not going to do another series together on cars."

He added that "you should never say 'never' - but that it was "pretty unlikely."

Reflecting on his legacy, May said the trio had been working together for "longer than we thought."

"We have to accept that we have been doing this for almost 22 years. When I started doing it in 2003, I thought it was a bit fun and it would maybe last a few years."

May, Clarkson and Hammond began presenting the BBC's Top Gear in 2003 and launched The Grand Tour on Amazon in 2015.

" Today I recorded the latest voiceover piece from The Grand Tour," May told the podcast audience at the BBC Radio Theater.

He added that it was "remarkable." lasted so long, and he was "grateful and grateful that it happened."

"I don't want to be the person in the pub who was on TV," he joked.

He told the audience that his greatest ambition now was “to reach the end of my life without crushing anyone”.

"I have succeeded so far and it would be deeply ironic and unpopular if it happened now."
