The new university union, CONUA, appoints a national president, a vice-president and others

The Congress of University Scholars (CONUA) has appointed its National President and other members of its National Executive Council (NEC).

CONUA, a splinter faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), was officially registered by the Nigerian government in October 2022 and received a registration certificate in January 2023.

The union has approved the appointment of 'Niyi Sunmonu as National President and Abdulhameed Salawu as National Vice President.

Mr. Sunmonu was the Acting President of ASUU, OAU Chapter, who became the founding National Coordinator of CONUA when it was founded following the crisis that rocked ASUU on campus.< /p> Leadership Appointment

The members of the CONUA NEC were appointed in the presence of the representative of the Minister of Labor and Employment, Chris Ngige, during his first meeting of the NEC at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Saturday.

Mr. Ngige was represented by Clément Fatoki.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr. Sunmonu and released after the meeting which was held between Friday 20 and Sunday 22 January.

"Members were accredited by 15 federal and state universities while 11 universities sent apologies, due to logistics," reads part of the statement.

CONUA urges the government to ensure reasonable use of university autonomy, which it says: "must, as a matter of urgency, contain seemingly invisible corruption and redress accreditation fraud in universities."< /p>

"Education is central to the development of any nation, including Nigeria. CONUA strongly believes that education can be made 'cheap' by ensuring an uninterrupted academic calendar in the Nigerian ivory towers ", the union said.

The statement listed other CONUA NEC members including Henri Oripeloye as National Secretary, Issa Abdulraheem as Deputy National Secretary, Ernest Nwoke as National Publicity Secretary and Aminu Isyaku as as National Liaison Officer.

Others include Monica Orisadare as National Treasurer, Mukhtar Ibrahim as National Finance Officer, Bassey Abasiene as National Welfare Officer Chinedum Nwadighoha as National Investment Officer and Ayodeji Ige as Advisor union legal.
