Last month, YouTube announced updates to its content moderation policies that would be rolled out before the end of December. Content creators, particularly in gaming, are reporting increased rates of demonetization, suggesting that these changes are in effect.

The advertiser-friendly ad guidelines are intended to give creators greater transparency on how videos are evaluated for demonetization on topics such as inappropriate language and violence. YouTube has provided a specific list for game content creators. As a result, the policy appears to challenge depicted violence in video games more generally.

While many games are fine (if the creators adhere to all other restrictions), many games are unlikely to monetize. For example, videos will not be eligible for monetization if they include "graphical dead bodies in non-educational video" or "ultra-graphic acts of violence (including those involving law enforcement) and injuries".

Many creators have reported that videos featuring The Callisto Protocol gameplay have been demonetized. This massive change will deter creators from playing games that are too questionable. Otherwise, they risk not being paid by YouTube for their time. YouTube and its creators are a major marketing channel for gaming companies. As a result, developers may choose to tone down violent content for future titles. Additionally, it could have a huge impact on certain esports such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

This policy change also applies to past creator catalogs. This means that passive income earned by some creators could be significantly reduced overnight.
