Niger government imposes curfew over killing of village chief
Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Lambata in the state's Gurara local government area following a violent clash which led to the murder of the village chief, Mohammed Abdulsafur.
This was contained in a statement by state government secretary Ahmed Matane on Sunday in Minna, the state capital.
The chief of the village of Lambata was reportedly assassinated on Saturday by thugs during a violent clash.
Bello has ordered a curfew imposed on the city from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Sunday, until further notice.
He said the imposition of the curfew was intended to help security agencies stabilize the situation, save lives and restore law and order.
According to the governor, the government has strongly condemned the violence and the act of lawlessness that occurred in the town of Lambata.
He called on residents of the area to cooperate with security agents to restore peace in the city and urged security agencies to enforce the curfew.
