Nigerian presidency not for pensions – Peter Obi

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi said on Tuesday that Nigeria's presidential seat was too important to be used as a retirement benefit.

Mr. Obi made the statement during a public meeting with members of the Council of Traditional Leaders of Anambra State in Awka.

The LP candidate who listed the powers of a president in socio-economic and political situations, warned Nigerians against electing the wrong person as president on February 25.

He did not specify his position.

He blamed insecurity, inflation, unemployment and other problems on the consumer nature of the economy.

Mr. Obi said that if the country moved from consumption to production, most of the inherent problems would be reduced.

He stressed the need for the country to take advantage of its agricultural potential to fight unemployment.

Mr. Obi urged traditional chiefs to support the emergence of credible political leaders.

He said, "Sitting on the fence in the 2023 election could be politically costly for the country.

"I know the constitution requires traditional leaders not to engage in partisan politics, but when bad leaders are elected, it negatively affects you like the others.

"For that, you need to get involved in a way that you can't be seen, but feel your actions," he said.

“We are pleased that your candidacy today is being followed by news of your competence, capacity and ability to secure the presidency of Nigeria.

“The news around your aspiration is that you represent hope for a new Nigeria not that you are from the south east and we are happy about that,” Okafor said.
