Nigeria Witnesses Four Aviation Fuel Contamination Incidents in 2023 - NCAA

Nigeria's aviation sector was threatened four times in 2023 with incidents of Jet A1 fuel contamination with water being discovered in commercial aircraft tanks.

In an effort to prevent it from happening again, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is engaging stakeholders to identify the root cause of the problem and find solutions.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting Thursday in Abuja, NCAA Chief Executive Captain Musa Nuhu explained that although the agency is a regulator, it cannot solve the problem alone.

"Yes, we are the regulatory agency, but we cannot solve this problem on our own. That is why we are involving all stakeholders to identify the root cause of the problem and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

"Everything we do is for the traveling public, to build confidence that by boarding an aircraft, they will arrive at their destination safely," he said

During an article presentation, NCAA Director of Airworthiness Standards, Engr. Gbalohan Abalan said in the latest incidents that the plane's tank was full of water.

He thanked God that the plane was on the ground, "imagine what would have happened if the plane had dictated water into the air, both engines would have stopped and the plane would have fallen from the air like a stone".

According to him, on July 17, 2023, a multiple-failure water test incident while refueling a national airline occurred in Lagos.

On July 7, 2023, another incident of APU shutdown due to heavy water contamination occurred at Yola. Similarly, on April 28, 2023, an incident of APU shutdown during engine start due to fuel contamination occurred in Abuja.

He said that on April 30, 2023, an incident of in-flight engine failure due to fuel filter bypass occurred in Abuja. Although in all incidents no accidents were recorded.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Intermediate Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Engr. Farouk Ahmed, promised to work in collaboration with other stakeholders to ensure that only quality aviation fuel is made available to the sector.

"We are ready to work with all stakeholders to ensure the stability of the fuel and also to ensure that the imported product is of the required quality", he assured
