#NigeriaDecides2023: Tinubu speaks about loss in Lagos and condemns attacks on Igbo traders

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu. condemned reports of attacks on Igbo traders following the result of the presidential election in Lagos State.

Mr. Tinubu, in a statement released Monday by one of the APC's campaign council spokespersons, Bayo Onanuga, expressed concern about pockets of violence in some parts of the state.

The candidate said he was "concerned by reports of violence in some parts of the state, particularly the reported attacks on some traders of Igbo descent.

"The fact that the APC narrowly lost Lagos State to another party should not be the reason for the violence. As a democrat, you win some, you lose some. We must allow the process to continue unhindered across the country while maintaining peace and decorum,” the statement read.

Lagos, considered the most cosmopolitan state in Nigeria, has a large population of Igbos.

Mr. Tinubu was beaten earlier by Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Lagos State.

The 2023 presidential election in Lagos and many other states was marked by pockets of violence and disenfranchisement of voters. However, the elections were deemed largely peaceful in the state.

Identity, particularly religion and ethnicity, played a major role in the elections, according to observers and civic groups.

Mr. Obi got 582,454 votes to beat Mr. Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, who got 572,606 votes.
